2. 3DO: Star Control 2
The 3DO aimed to take gaming to new technological heights when the SNES and the Mega Drive were approaching the end of their lifecycles, but it ultimately became an early victim of the Sony PlayStation's runaway success.
That isn't to say the machine didn't play host to some unique and memorable games, like Star Control 2. Although it was technically a PC port, the game arrived on the console vastly improved, complete with voice acting and superior visuals.
Star Control 2 was a space shooter with substance. While dogfighting their way across the galaxy, players would communicating with strange alien races and an engaging story with twists and turns played out through these exchanges.
The space opera sequel struck a balance between role-playing, adventure and action, and the enhancements it received for the 3DO release were the cherry on top. It was almost worth paying the 3DO's £400 asking price for this game alone.
