8 Greatest Adventure Games We All Still Love

4. Beneath A Steel Sky

Revolution Software released Beneath a Steel Sky to the world in 1994. You can see the clear influence from graphic novels and comics in the game. Its cyberpunk setting and frightening society give the game a unique atmosphere that adhered it to fans worldwide. Beneath a Steel Sky is a dark game filled with the misery of the lower classes and the sheer lack of hope. The rich and the famous are sheltered from the pollution that ravages the wasteland, while the rest of society works in horrid conditions. Despite the bleak outlook a quirky robot sidekick accompanies you throughout the game, punctuating the depressing atmosphere with a large amount of humour. Other characters are also entertaining and are brought wonderfully to life by excellent voice acting. The graphics are highly stylised and you can see the influence of graphic novels in them instantly. The puzzles are never too difficult but logical and clear at all times. Unlike adventure games that used the SCUMM development system, such as The Secret of Monkey Island, the control system in Beneath a Steel Sky was simple and elegant. This made it incredibly intuitive and much easier to pick up and play for those who were not seasoned adventure-gamers. Beneath a Steel Sky is one of the most popular adventure games ever made and received a huge amount of critical acclaim when it was released. For those who haven€™t had a chance to play, you can grab it for free on GOG.com and Desura, as the game is now freeware.
