8 Greatest Adventure Games We All Still Love

3. I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream

This point-and-click adventure was based on the short story of the same name and the author, Harlan Ellison, and took an important role in the development of the game. It was released in 1995 having been developed by The Dreamers Guild. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is an excellent adventure game but what makes it memorable is that fact this it is an incredibly well done psychological horror. A somewhat corrupted computer, known as AM, has wiped out most of humanity leaving only five survivors. Those survivors are being kept alive artificially by AM so that it can continue to torture them. The game focuses on each character having their own €œadventure€. These take the form of tests that are designed to exploit each character through a perceived weakness in their personality. You€™ll have to overcome each test and go through the obstacles that AM has provided for you, as well as coming to terms with issues such as rape and mass murder. The subject matter of I Have No Mouth is incredibly mature, more so than many other horror games. The survivors are being kept alive against their will. After all of the torture they just want the release that comes with death. AM on the other hand seems to be sadistic to the extreme, perhaps the most evil of all supercomputers that have taken over the world in other works of fiction. The gruesome art-style lends itself completely to the action going on around it, while the eerie soundtrack provides an excellent accompaniment to the sheer horror that takes place. This dark title left an impression on everyone who played it and remains one of the best of its kind.
