3. Sonic & Knuckles
OK, I know this isn't a DLC, but rather a physical expansion. But come on. It's THAT good.
In fact, this expansion gets double points because not only is Sonic & Knuckles absolutely brilliant, but it's also a physical add-on as well-meaning that you got the joy of turning the original Sonic The Hedgehog 3 cartridge into a Frankenstein's monster.
Luckily the game played much better than this plastic abomination looked, as the six levels on offer here held some utterly brilliant design choices. However the main meat of the whole experience came in the form of playing as Knuckles, and I'm sorry Tails but you've been seriously outclassed here. From his design to his ability to climb and glide all the way down to the fact that he bum rushes Sonic and makes him look like a right tit before swiping the Chaos Emeralds, Knuckles was just the best.
Fans weren't even upset that you couldn't play as Tails with this expansion, as his replacement's moveset was in many ways superior and made getting through some of the tougher levels an absolute breeze. He may have skipped leg day from this point onwards, but Knuckles and the series overall was running at full speed at this point.
