Many love to play chill, cosy video games after a long, hard day, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, there's also something to be said for the cathartic intensity that games as a medium can muster.

With gaming's heightened level of immersion compared to, say, movies, our bodies and minds are far more likely to react as though we're actually neck-deep in the action ourselves.

And that energising thrill can be one hell of a drug - one that adrenaline junkie players might seek out at every possible opportunity.

With that in mind, video games don't come much more intense than this lot.

From terrifying horror games to brutal action masterpieces and maddeningly tough survival romps, these games all gave the player little quarter for relaxation, instead choosing to put them firmly through the wringer from start to finish.

You might not want to play games like this all the time, because there's something to be said for a balanced gaming diet, but if you're in the market for an experience to truly put your nerves and mettle to the test, look no further...

8. Alien: Isolation

It's telling that only around 15% of Alien: Isolation players have actually beaten the game, owing to not only its surprisingly lengthy play-time, but also how utterly nerve-shredding an experience it is.

A first-person survival horror Alien game was basically a dream come true for many of the series' fans, and yet, the end result could arguably be a little too stressful for its own good.

Rather than facing the xenomorph head-on, as Ellen Ripley's daughter Amanda you're generally tasked with avoiding it at all costs.

Yet this becomes increasingly taxing, as the game's ingenious AI gives the impression that the xenomorph learns from your actions throughout.

Every single interaction with the alien is a total pulse-pounder, all the more so as players are acutely aware that there's nothing they can do but flee this thing.

Between this, the shrewd use of jump scares, and general atmosphere of the space station Sevastopol, Alien: Isolation is a gut-wrenching experience that's genuinely tough to play for extended periods.
