8 Overpowered Weapons Hidden In Horror Video Games

The concept of player empowerment being inverted is a very common horror video game trope.

After all, you can create much more tension in a scenario where the character has limited means to defend themselves or has the constitution of an iron lung patient, as this projects onto the player controlling them a sense of fear for their safety.

One wrong move could spell death in countless ways, and so horror video games typically aim to make you feel as helpless as possible to keep you on the edge of a nervous breakdown at all times.

Many recent horror titles even remove the possibility of fighting back at all, just to truly hammer this point home, but these entries? Well, they like to play things a little different.

They've made you suffer, they've seen you cry in fear, and so now it's time to unleash all the frustration and turn the tables entirely. The video games we're covering today hid secret, truly overpowered weapons within them for you to exact your bloody vengeance.

8. Hand Cannon - Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 is a game that really does not pull its punches.

Widely considered to be the apex of the series, this much-loved sequel dialled up the tension, horror and gore to almost unprecedented levels, and I'm pretty sure that the section where we have to push a needle into Isaac's eye might well be the basis for many players waking nightmares to this day.

However, while it might always seem that poor old Mr. Clarke is on the back foot at every moment, the game does offer you a chance to give the necromorphs an almighty middle finger - both metaphorically and literally - with the outstandingly brilliant Hand Cannon. Yup, it's a foam finger weapon unlocked after completing the game on Hardcore Mode, the hardest setting of the game.

To be honest, this reward is the LEAST they could do after pushing us through that abhorrently mode, but all that stress will simply wash away when you hear Isaac making "bang bang" and "pew pew" noises as he blasts foes apart with ease.

The gun never needs to reload, has outstanding damage, and is utterly overpowered, making for a hilarious wind-down playthrough after the nightmare you've endured.
