8 Terrifying Video Game Moments That Are Laughably Outdated Now

2. Eternal Darkness's Blood-Soaked Bathtub

Eternal Darkness was one of the most innovative survival horror games of its time. Introducing a sanity meter that added unique and terrifying elements to the gameplay the more players let it fill up, it's a travesty that more games didn't riff on its distinctive brand of horror following its release.

Unfortunately though, not everything was as inspired as that one mechanic, and the game still relied heavily on the regular jump scares you'd expect from a horror title. The one that always pops up in particular though is the bathroom scene, with the player opening a door to uncover a dead body lying in a bathtub filled with blood.

While shocking at the time, the scene is more noteworthy now for its early 2000s music video style of editing. Featuring flashy cuts rather than just letting the moment speak for itself, the jump scare is far too stylised to be effective. It can still give you a jolt if you don't know what's coming, but the bright lights and loud noises hide the fact that there's nothing happening that's even remotely creepy.
