8 Terrifying Video Game Moments That Are Laughably Outdated Now

1. Resident Evil's First Zombie

Introducing the main enemies for the whole game, the first encounter with one of the undead shamblers haunting the Spencer Mansion in Resident Evil needed to set the tone for the entire franchise going forward. Fortunately, by indulging in a slow build the developers at Capcom were able to create one of the defining moments in video game history, scaring the pants off everyone who picked the game up back in 1996.

Now though, it's difficult to see how anyone could have been scared by the original Resident Evil. Not only does the campy voice acting and horrible FMV introduction completely skew the tone before it even drops you into the game proper, but the janky first shot of a zombie lacks any sort of real punch.

In the title's defence, the censored version that just has the ghoul looking over his shoulder is a little spookier, but the original uncut scene where the zombie drops a half-eaten head is so entrenched in the B-Movie tone that it breaks the tension completely.
