8 Things All Gamers Forgot They Used To Do

4. Fighting The Console War Battle In Person

Kids argue online over which gaming platform is best, be it Sony, Nintendo or the relatively new kid on the block Mr. Microsoft. It's fair to say that similar arguments have been going on for decades and so is nothing new. Yet we aren't even talking about the aged Sega Megadrive vs. SNES conflict or even the Sega Master System vs. NES wars of the 80s and 90s. No, you have to go back further when there were many small home computers to choose from. Starting around 1979 and beyond there was the aforementioned Dragon, Oric, Speccy, C64, BBC Micro, Amstrad CPC and others too. Sure, there were home computers even before that such as the ZX81 and TRS 80, but it was that main motley crew that people would get all indignant about if someone else had a different opinion on which was best. Despite all these differences though, there was no single king of the home computer market and petty arguments were common. The real difference was the internet as we know now was a mere glint in Mr. Tim Berners-Lee's eye, so a gamer would bravely have to physically confront the poor sap who had chosen their home computer system poorly. No hiding behind aliases like 'PS4suks' or 'XBone' or 'Nintendont' - you had to stand face to face with your Oric-owning enemy and call them out. If you owned a TI-99/4A however you were lucky though, as you wouldn't even be acknowledged.
