8 Things Nobody Wants To Admit About Battlefield 1
1. The Campaign Isn't Actually That Great
Battlefield 1's campaign isn't very good. Sure, the mini-narratives that DICE has crafted over the course of its five War Stories are full of excellent characters, brutally violent moments and more World War 1 poignancy than you can throw a bayonet at, but the actual gameplay in between these story bits is so disappointing.
Because each chapter is essentially made up of a few basic combat scenarios woven together in a disjointed and slap-dash way, there's nothing new here that shooters haven't been doing for years, and the rudimentary and lazy design of the actual missions themselves don't have a patch on the CoD-chasing single-player of Battlefield 4.
It's a shame, because the stories themselves are actually well told, it's just that the repetitive and uninspired gameplay detracts massively from their impact. You'll slog through lazily slapped together chapters like the one that has you armouring up and carrying around a minigun through the Italian countryside (so much for Battlefield 1 allegedly going against the whole "one man army" thing), just so you can get to the actual good bits - which are, strangely, the bits you don't actually get to play.
Again, the narratives themselves are top-notch, it just might have been better if they were individual cinematic movies rather than part of a divided up main campaign.
