8 Video Game Deaths That Just Didn't Work

3. Bill - Left4Dead

There are a fair few games which let players act out the events of their narratives, only to be told at a later date that only certain outcomes were canon. For example, the Dead Rising series doesn't actually see Frank West die until the absolute stinker of the fourth game, or Resident Evil, which allowed you to kill off Jill or Chris if you didn't manage to save them, but then went on to show both alive and... well, not exactly well considering all the horrors they see, but you get the idea.

Left4Dead was also guilty of this, and unfortunately it meant that the canon death of Bill actually lacked a lot of impact. The franchise isn't exactly known for character development but that didn't stop us from falling in love with both the cast of the original and the sequel. In the Passing DLC, we're told that Bill sacrificed himself to save the group and at that point in time it truly did feel like a bit of a gut punch. Bill was grizzled, quick witted and an even quicker shot so it was a shame to lose him.

However, when The Sacrifice DLC came out and let us play through this event, we found out that Bill didn't actually need to die at all as any player could stay behind and embrace their heroic fate. What this meant was that players hoping to see a scripted event with some actual pathos ended up just sacrificing whoever felt like it, thus removing a lot of the emotional payoff.
