7. GTA 3
It’s so easy to forget just how utterly game-changing GTA 3 was when it dropped back in the day. While there had obviously been 3D action games before this point, nothing felt so grandiose, nothing felt so alive and nothing quite captured the absolute chaotic playground vibe quite like Rockstars classic.
And for those lucky enough to NOT have to play the absolutely hobbled version that claims to be the current “definitive” edition they will likely remember the absolutely incredible jump up between GTA2 and 3. To go from a top-down, sprite-based rampage to this was an absolute mind messer, so much so that even Marvel's Mysterio was like “daaaamn”.
While the formula would go through so many tweaks and changes across the years and arguably reach the point where anything else will see diminishing returns, GTA3 both shattered, reinvented, and redefined its own style like no other franchise at the time. Big thumbs up.
