Helldivers 2 is a game that few outside of the original shooter's fanbase had on their radars in early 2024, but that quickly changed.

Ultimately it was a perfect storm of circumstances that propelled Helldivers 2 to astronomical success - it was a standalone sequel that required no prior knowledge of the series, placed an emphasis on teamwork, had a tongue-in-cheek tone, spawned innumerable memes, and had an extremely appealing AA price tag.

These factors together, combined with solid reviews and developer Arrowhead Game Studios' clever use of social media to progress the game's story, made Helldivers 2 a surprise smash hit.

It went on to peak at more than 450,000 concurrent players on Steam barely two weeks after release, and sold over 12 million units within three months of being on the market.

And yet, given how much chatter the game has sustained online over the past year, you couldn't be blamed for assuming it'd sold much, much more than that.
