2. Among Us

Among Us
InnerSloth

Among Us was another big gaming success story of the pandemic, but unlike Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it had actually already been out for the better part of two years before popping off.

The ludicrously entertaining social deduction party game actually launched in 2018, releasing to little attention and struggling to maintain more than a few-hundred consecutive players on Steam.

But by the spring of 2020, with the pandemic in full swing, Among Us caught on courtesy of streamers playing the game, its novel take on the Mafia/Werewolf formula instantly connecting with millions beset by quarantine-induced cabin fever.

Among Us' sales promptly skyrocketed overnight, and by September 2020, it had set a mind-boggling record of 3.8 million concurrent players across platforms, before soon enough counting 500 million players among its number.

That's... quite literally a massive slice of the world's population right there, and though Among Us' popularity has since declined considerably, that's really just a testament to how thoroughly it captured the zeitgeist of 2020.
