8 Video Games Fans SAVED From Annihilation
4. Starcraft
While the likes of Fall Guys and Cyberpunk 2077 are going through this rigmarole of losing source code as we speak, an even bigger game almost lost the keys to the kingdom, were it not for the actions of a good-natured fan.
Back in 1998, some unscrupulous soul had taken it upon themselves to steal the source code from the almighty original Starcraft, and yet thanks to a random bit of happenstance, a player called Khemist49 ended up with the disc after buying "a box of Blizzard stuff" off of eBay in 2017.
Unsure of what to do with the disc, they took to Reddit where the little devils that make up that community begged him to release the code, likely so they could flood the world with even more Zerg porn, yet Khemist49 resisted and instead sent the disc back to Blizzard.
Their actions were rewarded with not only a tonne of free merch, a copy of Overwatch, AND a fully paid trip to Blizzcon, but also helped fans of the original the world over keep their slice of RTS heaven a little more free from hackers. All this could have derailed the entire experience, especially seeing as Blizzard were gearing up to release a remaster of the game at the time too.
