8 Video Games Fans SAVED From Annihilation
5. Far Cry
It's hard to imagine, but the original Far Cry, as outstandingly fun as it was for the time and how much of a study it became on "can my PC handle this HEFT?", almost became the first video game to send itself into oblivion years after it launched.
After years lounging in the sun and soaking up critical and commercial praise, it seemed like development and support for the title was beginning to wrap up, and with a bow and a wave, the devs released patch 1.4 in 2006 before departing to new pastures.
Yet if the team listened closely they would have heard fans crying out, not in exclamations of praise or farewell, but more along the lines of "YOU'VE INTRODUCED A BUG THAT MEANS THE A.I CAN SEE THROUGH THE WALLS!"
To be more specific, this bug allowed enemy soldiers the ability to see through canvas material, and when you consider that pretty much all cover in the many MANY camps is tent based, you can see how this caused havoc with the overall experience. As a result, fans were left completely adrift with a game that should have been at its best, but was now at its worst.
Thankfully, fans were quick to act and saved the title with a few simple tweaks, yet for those without access to the fix or knowledge of how to implement mods, the game was dead in the water. Thankfully many, many years later, when the game arrived on GOG.com, the fan patch was made "official" by being included in the base build of the retail game.
