Now you might be looking at this entry and thinking, "I've never even heard of The Dark Engine, so how did fans save it from annihilation??"

Well my friends, hold your horses, as The Dark Engine isn't actually a game, but instead a piece of video programming code that was the backbone of classic titles like Thief 1, Thief 2 and System Shock 2.

Therefore its discovery on a developmental Dreamcast unit was something of a massive boon to fans of these titles. Once extracted from the Dreamcast, the entire Engine was reverse engineered and then finally released online for fans to enjoy.

And what joy there was to be had, as with this tool, modders were able to patch and fix all three games to such an extent that each can run on the latest systems without issues, and are so packed with content that they are listed as the definitive experiences for their respective franchises.

Or should that be fan-chises?
