8 Video Games That Forced You To Battle Loved Ones
3. Borderlands 2
Oh, Handsome Jack, you really were one of a kind weren't you?
A desperately evil man stuffed full of sarcastic and cruel quips and with a desire so utterly sweaty for success at any cost that it lead him to commit atrocities so horrible they were genuinely unforgivable. And yet if you ask any player what their favorite thing was about Borderlands 2, his name would likely be in the top five.
However, one thing I can most definitely assure was not any fan favorite moment was the heartwrenching battle they had against Bloodwing, Mordecai's pet bird/bat/waking winged nightmare in which Jack had captured poor Bloodwing and pumped it full of slag in order to forcibly mutate her. Not only was it absolutely shocking to see how little care Jack had for life but it was a horrifically personal attack on a prior Vault Dweller that was done solely to spite those chasing after him.
While the player character wouldn't have much of a relationship with Bloodwing outside of wanting to help out a friend, the player themselves likely would have a deeper connection to the animal, if not just because it's an innocent creature, but also if they had played Borderlands 1 in which Bloodwing was an essential part of Mordecai's playstyle, helping him out in combat as well as clearly having an unbreakable bond with her owner.
All of this combines to make for a harrowing boss battle and one that ends with even more heartbreak once Jack detonates a bomb collar around Bloodwings neck, ensuring that there was no way to ever save her. Brutal.
