8 Video Games That KNEW They Broke The Rules

8. Capcom Had To Change The Devil May Cry Timeline

Devil May Cry 2 remains the weirdest entry in a franchise otherwise perfecting over-the-top character action, fun scripts, great set-piece bosses and all-round, a presentation that's not just a sea of brown and grey.

For whatever reason though, this highly anticipated sequel hit rock-bottom reception-wise, delivering a more solemn, flatly-delivered Dante that contrasted with the rest of his time in the games.

As such, DMC 2 was the defacto "ending" of whatever other instalments Capcom could plug in, and thus DMC 3 and 4 would take place before Dante got all bummed out about life, otherwise it just wouldn't make sense.

However, with the advent of Devil May Cry 5 and the return of a "whackier" Dante further in the timeline, Capcom were forced to upend the entire fiction to make it work.

According to producer Matt Walker, DMC 2's ending with Dante riding off into hell would now be a midpoint in his life - going into DMC 4 where the character is largely in the background anyway, and paving the way for full-on shenanigans in DMC 5.

Numbered sequels in chronological order?? Who are they, Rockstar?
