8 Video Games That Redefined The Horror Genre

3. Cultist Simulator

Cultist Simulator uses a tarot-esque deck of cards to build a world entirely in the player's imagination. Much like life, the hand that a character is dealt defines how they form their cult, and ultimately, their fate.

The game cleverly ushers players along a path towards the darkness, curating their emotions simply through descriptions of what is happening and who is around, and where scenes are set.

Before too long, the paranoia in the game, while not always explicitly stated, rises from the screen and into the player's mind. The seeds of mistrust of innocent people who cross your path are sown, and the ever-present threat of death by demon, police officer, or simply starvation becomes all too real.

At the end of the day the human mind is the most powerful game engine on the market, and Cultist Simulator can really get inside and harness that vivid imagination.

It really goes to show that horror games don't need ultra-high quality graphics or an A-list cast of voice actors, they just need to tell a scary story, and to tell it well.
