8 Video Games That Redefined The Horror Genre
2. Alien: Isolation
Alien: Isolation is another game that isn't strictly a horror game, but it can get pretty scary. The tension of Alien: Isolation perfectly replicates Ridley Scott's 1979 film, resulting in an incredibly scary game with classic sci-fi roots.
Ripley's daughter (the player) finds herself on an ill-fated mission to an abandoned space station - what could possibly go wrong? The space station and the story aren't scary in themselves, but the knowledge that the infamous xenomorph could pop out of a dark corner at any time is what makes this game really scary.
The lack of too much clutter on the screen serves to make the player feel truly inside the game, and before too long, it genuinely feels like you're wandering the dark, deserted corridors yourself.
The tension doesn't end once you've met the alien monstrosity, however, as the tight spaces and narrow air ducts of the space station confer a sense of claustrophobia, regardless of where it is being played irl. There is no room to breathe, and no way of escape.
Death is an inevitability when being stalked by an ever-evolving, learning alien, and when it comes, it is brutal and unforgiving. No spoilers, but this is not for the squeamish.
