8 Ways Video Games Punish You For Breaking Their Rules
3. Animal Crossing (2001)
In the original Gamecube release of Animal Crossing, players are able to travel to other players towns through the use of your town's train.
Should you decide to, for whatever reason, reset or disconnect your game while visiting another town, there's a good chance you'll run into a rather spooky form of punishment in the form of "Gyroid Face" - named so by players for obvious reasons.
Previously thought to be a bug but later proved to be an intentional form of punishment, Gyroid Face replaces your characters face with that of one of Animal Crossing's gyroids, as well as removing all of the items in your inventory at the time of resetting.
Whilst it's unsettling in its own right to see your character's face replaced with that of a mask featuring empty, hollow eyes and an a blank void where your mouth used to reside, the lore behind gyroids makes it even spookier.
Gyroids are based on Japanese haniwas, an item that was classically buried alongside the dead - implying that your character died when you reset. Considering this is a Nintendo game we're talking about, this is some creepypasta level stuff (although, thankfully, the punishment is temporary).
