8 Worst Spin-Offs From HUGE Video Game Franchises

6. Mortal Kombat: Special Forces

resident evil survivor 2 nemesis
Midway

It takes a truly ungodly level of bad to out-do 1997's thoroughly naff Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, but Special Forces went ahead and did it.

The game is a 3D spin-off in which players take control of Jax as he chases down Kano and his gang.

Unsurprisingly, deviating from Mortal Kombat's fighting game formula for a more generic action game, complete with firearms, didn't go down well with fans.

Navigating each of the game's levels is a thunderously boring time due to the bland level design and atrocious AI, while there are no Fatalities to speak of.

Plus, the dire lack of most of the series' signature characters meant it barely felt like it existed in the MK universe at all.

Special Forces was ultimately enough of a commercial bust for Midway that they actually put the series on pause as a result, realising they needed to formulate a foolproof plan for the next mainline entry, leading to the series-rejuvenating Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance in 2002.
