9 Great Video Games That Did Not Deserve The Hate

2. Dragon Age 2

One thing must be stated – Dragon Age 2 was never going to be Dragon Age: Origins 2. That story had been told: the Archdemon was killed and resurrecting another simply to repeat the events of Origins would have been unpopular to say the least. Dragon Age had to evolve.

And DA2's answer was bold. Rather than embark on yet another cookie-cutter quest to save the world, Bioware chose to to delve deeper into the dark corners of the lore it had created and confront the ugliness only hinted at in the first game. And instead of casting the player as yet another all-conquering hero, they take the role of a refugee trying to claw their way out of poverty. The result is a dark, deeply personal tale of an everyday hero trying desperately to keep their family together while around them their adopted city slowly crumbles into insanity.

This is a dark game, its setting oppressive, and much of what happens is horrific and unpleasant. It is not to everyone’s taste, but it was a bold attempt to tell a personal story and take the franchise in a new and creative direction. The critics, so often hard to please, appreciated its quality. That many fans reacted negatively is understandable, but Dragon Age 2 certainly did not deserve the hate.
