9 Heart-Breaking Gaming Moments When You Realised You Were The Bad Guy

5. Spec Ops: The Line - White Phosphorous

This is the gaming equivalent of Heart Of Darkness. Beginning in a classical third-person-shooter tone, the player is introduced to all the basic gameplay mechanics; taking cover, aiming, firing... but things take a dark turn as the ordinary insurgents get replaced with actual US soldiers. Do not mistake The Line for an ordinary TPS, for it's probably the closest to a realistic horror games have ever gotten.

There's a number of gut-wrenching moments that define Cpt. Walker as the bad guy of the game, but none as terrifying as the infamous white phosphorus scene. Being attacked by the 33rd regiment that decided to stay in Dubai after being ordered to leave, Walker and his team used a mortar loaded with said projectiles on the bunker in which the 'enemies' were hiding. After the bombardment, the player is treated to what he's actually done. Those soldiers weren't trying to kill Walker - they were defending the civilians that were trapped in the building. This game makes you see how your generic protagonist shifts into a relentless monster hell-bent on killing everything in his way.

The changes are subtle, but they get to you. The executions, the way Walker treats his men and even his voice. Scenes from this game stay with you for a long, long time, and they're not pretty.
