9 Heart-Breaking Gaming Moments When You Realised You Were The Bad Guy
4. The Last Of Us - The Hospital
This is not a game about heroism and/or saving the world. It depicts the worst case scenario and, more prominently, the lengths people will go to fulfil their wishes. Be it finding something to eat, keeping a friend alive or searching for a vaccine, it doesn't matter. In this story, it's all about survival of the fittest. There's no moment when this is more obvious than when Joel returns to the Fireflies hospital to save Ellie.
True, Joel has been a tad bit shady right from the start, but nothing could prepare us for what we had to lead him through at that hospital as he effectively dooms the human race's chance at a vaccine against the virus. There was no turning back, no second thinking about the gravity of what he was doing. True, the first doctor threatened him with a knife (with justifiable cause, this being man's last hope after all), but what did the second one do? Or all the others? It was selfish, monstrous and terrifyingly human.
To make things even worse, after murdering everybody in the hospital - including his old friend - in an effort to rescue his surrogate daughter, he lies about what he had done. From terror, the game rapidly shifts us to bitter resentment of the character we were controlling all along. So how are we supposed to feel about Joel after this story? After all, he's just doomed humanity, and kept Ellie in the dark.
