9 Mind-Bending Levels That Will Melt Your Brain

1. Hedon - Errant Signal

Hedon is a game you’ve almost certainly never heard of, which is a pity, because with meaty gunplay, gorgeously atmospheric and expansive levels, and a badass protagonist right up there with Doomguy, it’s one of the most underrated throwback shooters available.

And in Errant Signal that quality really shines.

Barring a subtly surreal prologue what you encounter prior to this level is sane enough. But when you come face-to-face with a static-filled portal surrounded by ominous black goop you know something is off.

And it is.

Step through and the goop is gone. The static is gone. Move forward, back through a map you thought you knew, and suddenly the walls are rising and falling and the cavern you’re stood in looks awfully like the one you just left.

What follows is an utter mind-screw of a level, a disorientating, otherworldly march through a dark void of black monoliths, rooms turned upside down, and the intensely unsettling spectre of your own corpse lying at your feet.

Brilliantly the game never fully explains itself, whether what you see is a real, a figment of the mind, or both, crafting an experience that you’ll be mulling over for some time to come.
