9 Mind-Bending Levels That Will Melt Your Brain
2. Dusk - The Escher Labs
As the unholy love-child of Quake and Blood, Dusk is everything you’d expect: a blood-soaked rampage through unsettling, often downright demonic, environments populated by twisted enemies that will, quite literally, jump-scare the bejeezus out of you.
What you don’t expect is a geometry jump-scare and yet Dusk somehow pulls it off.
Opening in a clean if eerie lab The Escher Labs is a positively wholesome place – by Dusk standards. But in short order the façade begins to crack. The hallways shift, the ceilings spew fire, and as you turn an innocent corner you find that the suspiciously normal hallway you just left has morphed into a mind-melting geometric jumble of floors, ceilings and walls that are simultaneously all and neither.
And that’s only the beginning, because between architecture that grows even more chaotic, an otherworldly realm that looks like some Eldritch abomination’s ribcage, and a boss battle set on floating islands in a black void, this is one rabbit-hole that only keeps digging deeper.
Dusk has plenty of weirdness in store, serving up the equally trippy Homecoming level, but that first sight of reality-warping madness only confirmed your suspicions that you were playing something truly special.
