9 Movies That Blatantly Ripped Off Video Games
8. Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets Ripped Off Mass Effect
Valérian and Laureline is a series of French comics that clearly inspired Star Wars. So when a Netflix movie was announced that would be adapting the comic, sci-fi nerds from The Enterprise to The Millennium Falcon were excited.
However, when the trailer was released, it didn’t look like the brightly-colored ‘70s comic book or Star Wars, but it did look like a popular gaming franchise...
When the trailer was released all ...the ...people noticed Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets looked just like a Mass Effect movie.
One of the big ideas the trailer presents is a space station hub where folks from all over the universe travel through before galaxy-hopping. This, of course, sounds more than a little reminiscent of The Citadel in Mass Effect. The armor even looks like Mass Effect cosplay.
This supposed "thievery" even trickled down to the movie's graphics department, as the title card uses a font identical to Mass Effect's iconic strike-through logo.
It all worked out in the end, as Mass Effect set the standard for storytelling in modern gaming and Valerian has already been forgotten. If only we could say the same thing about Mass Effect: Andromeda.
