9 Oddly Terrible Levels In Otherwise Great Video Games
5. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Emma Emmerich
One might argue that the entirety of Metal Gear Solid 2 (the second part with Raiden, at least) was rather bothersome, but the worst part of the entire game has to be the sequence when Raiden has to bring Otacon's sister, Emma, back to him. See, even Ashley from Resident Evil 4 was more useful than Emma ever is. She is chronically scared of absolutely everything, including water, bugs and weapons. So Raiden has to swim through a lenghty part of the level with her on his back, give her air, drag her around and even return her to the starting point. He even has to shoo away the bugs that are scuttling on the floor. One would expect Emma to be a vital character further down the line, but no. Spoiler Alert: Vamp stabs her just after you've hauled her ass all over the power plant. Huge parts of Metal Gear Solid 2 were pretty much boring fetch quests, but none fall as un-satisfyingly short as this little plot here. After doing our best to keep her alive, the vampire douchebag just appears out of thin air and flushes everything down the drain. She was just a side quest, a loose end that had no effect on the story but was used to increase the longevity of the game - in a typical Kojima fashion. Her departure is touching and everything, but not even the cooler parts of the game can justify something as cubersome as Emma was. Hopefully such a thing won't happen again. Not to our generation, at least.
