9 Oddly Terrible Levels In Otherwise Great Video Games
4. Psychonauts - Meat Circus
By all accounts, Psychonauts is a wonderful game full of discovery and fascinating powers that are an absolute thrill to use. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have that one mortifying level that is going to burn through your nervous system. Originally the Meat Circus level was so hard that the developer actually had to redesign it a bit for the PC port of the game because it would be virtually impossible to complete it with a keyboard. Well guess what. They didn't do a really good job. Our hero is supposed to save a runaway bunny from the monstrosities that want to catch it and use it as food. The fact that those things have loads of more meat on their bones than a bunny is entirely ignored. What makes this levels as aggravating as it is, is the stupid rabbit. He is afraid of you as much as he is of the actual monsters, and will actively try to prevent you in the task of keeping him alive. This is essentially an escort mission where the thing you have to protect is running away from you. What's worse, there are plenty of platforms to navigate around here, too, and they're as stupidly designed as they could ever be. Miss a jump by an inch and you fall down. The bad news doesn't end there, as you'll soon find out that the game's engine can only register a couple of simultaneous key presses, making the diagonal double jump the stuff of legends. You're going to get yourself into a platforming nightmare, consisting entirely of a gross and stupid level, unresponsive controls and a terrible quest. Good luck.
