9 Reasons Resident Evil 7 Is 2017's First Must-Have Game

7. A Supremely Innovative Storytelling Device

For the most part, you'll spend your time in Resi 7 wandering through the various hallways, rooms and exteriors, collecting up items and trying to stay alive. However, occasionally you'll find VHS tapes, which can be used in any of the television sets located in some of the safe rooms.

Doing so 'transports' you into the footage itself, and you'll play the role of the camera operator. In the original demo this meant finding footage of a team of individuals exploring the mansion, giving off a Blair Witch vibe that was just perfect as an introduction of things to come.

You can also play as alternate main characters, and at one point you'll be dropped you into the shoes of another hapless victim of the Bakers, tasked with surviving a Saw-like puzzle room without being killed in the process.

This setup allows Capcom to keep Ethan's story on a particular track, whilst also having these 'drop-in/drop-out' vignettes that only serve to enhance the atmosphere of the game overall. It's something that feels fresh and innovative, and we'll hopefully see many other games utilising this narrative method going forward.
