8. Pace Of The Story Is Perfect

Not since Manhunt has their been a game that so expertly cast you as the underdog, forever being trod on by your oppressors, only to slowly equip you with the means to fight back, one step at a time.

Again, sans spoilers, the pacing of RE7's 'hunted becomes the hunter' dynamic isn't the main thrust of gameplay, but there's a brilliant moment where after going through a particularly disgusting ordeal and being left rather worse off, Ethan finds a gun, only to say through gritted teeth, "Right... okay", letting you empathise with his mindset as he decides to survive no matter what.

From there, Capcom know just how to make you feel empowered enough to fight back, without giving into Ethan actually holding all the cards. The Bakers themselves appear to be completely immortal, but you'll continually be greeted by hulking Mold enemies staggering around corners with no sound cues, or have to tackle a score of them in a small area.

Like Cabin in the Woods, Cloverfield or Alien, by putting our protagonist through all sorts of death-defying, blood-spattered encounters - all from the first-person, in this case - it only serves to strengthen that bond and power you through to the next encounter.
