9 Short Sentences That Ruin Major Video Games

4. Haytham Kenway's Section Ruined Connor As A Character In Assassin's Creed III

Apparently, Ubisoft have been taking lessons from Hideo Kojima in the art of fooling a fanbase. When Assassin's Creed III was announced, new lead character Connor was revealed; a Native American Assassin who plays a role in the American Revolutionary War. Trailers showed him wielding tomahawks and free-running through dense forestry; exciting stuff, right? Then the game came out and we started our new lives in America as a man named Haytham Kenway. Huh? You spend the first four or five hours of Assassin's Creed III as Haytham in an hugely over-extended prologue. While his story is fairly interesting, it's overshadowed by the unshakable feeling that we're not playing as the game's central character; it doesn't help that Haytham's missions are pretty tedious (it's basically a series of tutorials that takes about five hours to get through). Struggling through does reward you with the game's finest moment though; a great plot twist which pulls you back into the story effortlessly. Then we finally get put into Connor's shoes and suddenly, we start to regret wishing we were playing as him. After more missions which basically double as tutorials (hide and seek, anybody?), we realise that actually, playing as Haytham wasn't so bad after all; at least he was doing something exciting. Using Haytham as the opening character was a neat way to ease us into the story of the game but it absolutely killed any chance we had of growing attached to Connor; he arrives too late and we have little opportunity to see the personality beneath his rough exterior. It's really no surprise that Ubisoft opted to reinvigorate the franchise with a new lead character rather than focus more titles on a character that fans really struggled to like.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
