9 Disastrous Video Games That Totally Killed Their Consoles

2. PlayStation 3 - Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013)

Man, what a slap in the face for fans of the Alien this was. When Sega bought the rights to the franchise from 20th Century Fox and gave Gearbox Software to go ahead with development, the end product was supposed to be something epic, a swansong for this generation of console. Along with a supposedly canon storyline riddled with continuity errors, the game was riddled with bugs, hampered by shoddy graphics and crippled by awful AI. The multi-player mode €“ an essential part of any game worth its salt at this point on the gaming timeline €“ was makeshift and ill-conceived, the final insult to those who had followed this games development closely. Several gaming sites actually compared clips from Gearbox€™s pre-release sequence demonstrations with the corresponding sequence in the finished article, highlighting the fact that the games graphics somehow got poorer between the height of the development stage and the release date! These revelations prompted Gearbox president Randy Pitchford to launch an internal investigation, though the damage had already been done. The power of the Alien name meant that sales remained at a respectable level, though word of mouth made sure the game was known for what it was, the PS3 crawling into a corner to die.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
