9 Video Games You Never Thought You'd Get To Play

5. Diablo III

Duke Nukem Forever
Blizzard

Such was the spectacle of Diablo III's disastrous launch that it completely overshadowed the massive development time of the game. The awful DRM/always online debacle really helped people forget this game took eleven years to come out.

Though for the unknowing, the existence of the game only came to light in 2008. It had actually been in development seven years prior, before Blizzard North was amalgamated with the main company.

Part of the delay was the game's switch to Blizzard's own proprietary engine, instead of the Havok engine used in previous installments. However, it was 2008's announcement that touted the much-derided always online nonsense, much to everyone's chagrin.

Fortunately, massive piracy nonsense aside, Diablo III was a commercial and critical success. As someone who has dabbled with the series, it was worth the wait.

That it came to consoles a year or so later was also testament to the series' staying power, but it was touch and go for a while. Several iterations later, it seems Diablo III has worked on and rectified some of its initial mistakes. Seems this Blizzard had a lot of force behind it.
