Activision Confirms Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Reboot
New engine, no season pass and cross-play!
Kotaku's Jason Schreier reported last week that Activision was set to "soft-reboot" the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare brand with Infinity Ward's 2019 entry into the smash hit shooter franchise.
And now we have confirmation from Activision themselves, who officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for release this October, before dropping a host of new information alongside a glossy reveal trailer.
The trailer doesn't give too much concrete away, but reveals that iconic mainstay Captain Price is back, and the game will benefit from a snazzy new engine, which notes a marked visual upgrade from the series' mouldy IW engine (as brilliantly detailed by Digital Foundry).
After last year's Black Ops 4 was the first Call of Duty game to launch without a single-player campaign, fans will be relieved to learn that the new Modern Warfare boasts a cinematic story mode, spanning "European cities and volatile expanses of the Middle East."
Traditional multiplayer is back too, of course, in addition to an all-new co-op mode, "featuring a collection of strategic co-op missions accessible to all skill levels." As for Battle Royale? We'll have to wait and see.
Elsewhere, the series' much-maligned season pass model is gone - which historically caused a schism between the haves and have-nots - and the game will also be the first entry in the franchise to support cross-play between PC and consoles. For PC players, Modern Warfare will be exclusively available from Blizzard's Battle.net launcher.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launches for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 25.
