3. The Sheer Scope
Youve probably already heard that Assassins Creed IIIs Frontier setting alone is 1.5 times the size of Brotherhoods Rome; thats old news by now. And going in, I had this in my head. So I was expecting big and big I got. What I wasnt quite preferred for was the sheer scope. The city of Boston alone is big enough, probably, to house an entire game but the moment you step into that Frontier for the first time, thats when you start marvelling at the true depth of AC IIIs setting. Its not just the size thats astounding (although size does play a factor, despite what you may hear about boats and oceans) but the level of depth and detail on offer. Not one portion of the frontier looks like the last; animals litter the landscape leaving evidence of their presence behind them; weather affects every surface differently and not once do graphics or textures suffer as a result. Make no mistake, AC III is a staggeringly huge game. Sure, maybe its not the biggest game ever in terms of sheer map size; but in depth, in scope, I really think youd struggle to find a richer, more painstakingly detailed setting (with perhaps the exception of the aforementioned Red Dead Redemption). Once again bravo, Ubisoft; you guys really outdid yourselves this time.
