It all began with Altair, Grand Master of the Levant Brotherhood in the 13th century. The protagonist of the very first game in the series, every Assassin Creed fan's first kill, freerun and leap of faith was carried out by Altair.

Beginning out the first game as an arrogant and selfish, but highly skilled, member of the Brotherhood, Altair is actually introduced to players by breaking all three of the guild's tenants, something that he soon pays a heavy price for.

Over the course of his travels across Acre, Damascus and Jerusalem through the game, Altair begins to soften. He rebuilds himself from the lowest rank up, and finally begins to understand that the attitude of believing himself to be better than those around him does far more harm than good.

Altair's later adventures in various spin offs and Assassins Creed: Revelations also add an extra layer of depth to his character, showing him off as one of the Brotherhood's most wise and sensitive Grand Masters throughout its history.

From mowing down entire hordes of Crusading armies, to a final farewell that never fails to draw in a few floods of tears, it's important players of any Assassins Creed game remembers whose life got the ball rolling first.
