It's always a great idea to know exactly what your party members can and can't do, so as soon as a new member joins your party open up their character sheet and take a look at their ability scores. When it comes to travelling through the world the most important ability scores are charisma and wisdom, so make a mental note of which party member is best at each one.

The party member that has the highest wisdom ability score will be well-versed in the perception skill, and will thus be able to scout ahead for any traps and discover enemies well before any of your other party members do. When you're about to approach an area where you assume dialogue will be taking place, switch over to the party member who has the highest charisma ability score, as they will be far more successful than the other uncharismatic sods.

Travelling like this will ensure that your party has the best chances of success with both passive and active ability checks, preventing you from blowing yourself up or being caught in a lie.
