Batman: Arkham Knight - 8 Essential Things It Must Fix From City
3. The Combat
Critics praised Arkham Asylum for its engaging, simple free-flowing combat that made you feel like you were the love child of Batman and Bruce Lee. Chaining together counter-attacks, punches and takedowns was deeply satisfying. It looked badass and felt badass. Asylum's combat system has been copied by many games since, including Sleeping Dogs and more recently Shadow of Mordor. There's no problem with that in itself, but Rocksteady created one when they assumed that bigger means better. There were way more enemies in Arkham City, a stupidly large number of gadgets to use and special moves that could be acquired by gaining experience. It sounds good in theory, but for a lot of people the sheer number of options was overwhelming. The ever-looming threat of being rudely interrupted half-way through a killer takedown by an idiot armed with a baseball bat meant that just punching and occasionally countering was usually the best strategy. We know little about Arkham Knight's combat, but what we do know points to it being an evolution of the current formula. There will be more options for environmental takedowns and the Batmobile can even get in on the action. We just hope it remains to be fun throughout the game's entire campaign and doesn't become the chore it was in City.
