Battlefield 1 Open Beta: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

It's one thing seeing a glossy trailer for a new game, but there's nothing quite like experiencing it for yourself to figure out whether the final title will live up to all that snazzy marketing.

The trailers weren't lying: Battlefield 1 is unquestionably a beautiful-looking game, even if we're given just a small glimpse of one very, very sandy map here. The character models, terrain, weapons and vehicles all look wonderful, and perhaps most surprising of all is that Battlefield 1 seems largely well-optimised for consoles.

Yes, the resolution and frame-rate both take a considerable hit compared to PC, but even when handling 64 players it plays surprisingly slickly for the most part, and the addition of an FOV slider to allow even console players to customise their aesthetic experience is a major bonus.

Battlefield 1 was always going to be a work of beauty on PC, and it's reassuring to see DICE not resting on their laurels when it comes to the "lesser" versions too.
