Before FIFA 13: The Evolution Of Football's Biggest Gaming Franchise

2005 - FIFA 2006 FIFA 06 saw a total overhaul in the game engine, with almost half of the games code from previous iterations having been rewritten. The "Off the ball" system of old, which allowed players to simultaneously control two team mates, was removed from the series. In its place came "team chemistry", which determined how well your starting XI played together. This was determined by the amount of games you had clocked up with the same squad - rotating the squad too heavily meant losing team chemistry. Manager mode also saw a big change. This time, players were put in charge of negotiating with sponsors for funding, managing a budget for transfers and wages, and keeping players at the club happy. For the first time in the series, if a player wasn't happy at the club (if he had not been played very often) then he would realistically refuse to sign a contract and would have a detrimental effect on the aforementioned team chemistry feature. John Motson and Ally McCoist were replaced as commentators in the game by Clive Tyldsley and Andy Gray. FIFA 06 also had a "classic moments" video section which could be unlocked through completing various challenges, and also allowed the player to play the first ever FIFA game in the series.
