That said, despite dropping the jet-pack fuelled features of the last Black Ops, the upcoming release will still make use of a near-future setting. Not much else has been revealed about the time period thus far, but it's unlikely Treyarch will turn their attention entirely back to the historical settings that made the franchise famous in the first place.

Again, this could be down to the fact that BLOPS 4 was already far into its development cycle by the time WW2 dropped, and simply didn't have the time to capitalise on the renewed interest in older settings. It's still unclear how far forward the next game is going to look, and it could only be a couple of years to simultaneously avoid being labelled either a "modern-military shooter" or a "sci-fi shooter".
