While the upcoming game is said to be using a near-future setting as the basis of its story, that doesn't mean players won't be transported to other time periods from throughout history.

Treyarch have always had a fondness for jumping around different historical settings, with Black Ops 2 famously having a single-player campaign that moved from the near-future back to Vietnam, while even the straight sci-fi third game found time to throw players into World War 2 at The Battle of the Bulge. Hell, even when the devs started to give players laser guns, they still made room for classic weaponry like the MP40 and M1 Garand.

It makes sense, then, that it's been rumoured the story of the next game could introduce flashbacks that will transport fans to the time period of the original Black Ops, tying the story of the upcoming game more closely into the previous instalments.
