5. Specialists Are Still Unwelcome & Unwanted

Sadly for Activision, in an era where the hero shooter is doing gangbusters, forcing COD to get a slice of the pie comes at the behest of the fanbase.

Put simply, even back in Black Ops 3, nobody welcomed the idea of "specialist" OTT heroes with unique weapons as a positive. It was seen as the further "de-legitimising" of Call of Duty's identity - something that Advanced Warfare onwards was already doing with its futuristic slant on combat itself.

For Treyarch/Activision to continue down this divisive road against so much opposition is puzzling, especially considering WWII looked to be exploring a return to boots on the ground gameplay.

Alas, Black Ops 4 has leant completely into including heroes to the detriment of the series mechanical identity, but that's something I'll return to in specificity.
