Death Stranding: 21 WTF Moments You Need To See To Believe

5. Twist! Sam Is A BB & Clifford Is His Father

Though the majority of the game seems to imply that Clifford Unger is the father of BB-28 - that's the BB you carry with you for the majority of the game - the ending reveals that this isn't the case at all, and instead, the BB we've seen Unger talking to in dreamlike flashbacks is none other than Sam himself.

That's right. Sam is a former BB and Clifford's son, and an ending flashback reveals that once Clifford learned the UCA were going to kill his comatose wife and child, he "euthanised" his wife (with a gun) and tried to escape with BB-Sam.

But Clifford and BB-Sam were both shot dead during the escape, at which point Amelie is (somehow) able to resurrect BB-Sam from her Beach, sealing up his bullet wound which creates the distinctive scar we see on Sam's abdomen throughout the game.

The twist feels vaguely reminiscent of Blade Runner 2049, where the expected Chosen One character, in this case BB-28, turns out to be "normal," while the real saviour, in this case Sam, was hidden in plain sight all along.
