Death Stranding: 6 Reasons It Could Be FANTASTIC (And 5 It Could Be A Disaster)
1. Repetitive Gameplay Loop
Perhaps the most pressing concern from watching Kojima's recent gameplay reveal is that Death Stranding's core gameplay loop looks like it could be far too repetitive to work. As interesting as being a futuristic Postman seems on paper, delivering packages for hours on end definitely seems like it would lose its charm.
Whether Kojima adds some sort of alternate objectives remains to be seen, but the gameplay currently available seems to just task you with navigating to a certain location, delivering a package, talking to the recipient and then heading back to HQ to load up your next delivery. Much like other open-world games that don't mix up their objectives, Death Stranding could wind up being a mindless slog towards its mid-to-late game.
While there's surely far more to the gameplay loop than walking between two different areas (there's the group of rebel human characters led by Troy Baker and the mysterious scientist portrayed by Mad Mikkelson that are both seemingly out for your head), it can't help but look like a game that lacks variety.
Combat, story and horror are clearly integral components, so hopefully they'll diversify what looks like a repetitive delivery simulator.
