21. Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Did anybody see this coming?

Yes, we'd covered Kingdom Battle as one of our many E3 leaks pre-show, but the reality of this Ubisoft/Nintendo crossover couldn't have been farther from a whimsical JRPG mould if it tried. Instead, Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a turn-based strategy title, totally in the vein of the mighty XCOM, albeit with hyper-coloured character models and gorgeous Nintendo-backed animation.

What gameplay we did see looked stunning from an aesthetic point of view, backed by a hefty dose of tactics as you decide precisely where to place your various units on the battlefield. The Rabbids were hilarious as always, fears of "Mario with a gun" amounted to nothing, and for once, we have Mario taking part in a genre he's yet to grace.

One hell of a showing.
