E3 2018: Predicting Release Dates For The Biggest Games
7. Beyond Good & Evil 2
Ubisoft's immensely ambitious sci-fi sequel was first re-introduced to audiences at last year's E3 where it was said to be at "day zero" of development. The game's showing at this year's E3 supported that, by showing off some snazzy pre-alpha gameplay which nevertheless dashed any hopes the game would be releasing anytime soon.
Series creator Michel Ancel recently posted on Instagram that he's planning to have a beta ready for the end of 2019, which would point at an early-to-mid 2020 release, no?
This combined with the visual majesty of that early footage has fans wondering whether the game will even end up releasing on current-gen tech at all, but considering the niche nature of the property, it'd be a huge risk to make it an early release on next-gen platforms. Basically, this is a really tough one to call.
Prediction: February 12, 2021. Now, bear with us here. Yes, that would make BGE2 almost three years away, but given the game's protracted development history so far, it's hard to have much faith in that possibly optimistic beta date.
Let's assume that by the end of 2019 it's announced that the game will in fact be released for next-gen platforms, which pushes the beta to mid-2020 when the PS5 and Xbox Two are out. Give the game another 6-9 months of polishing and time for these shiny new consoles to sell, and only then will the game finally hit stores.
It'd be great to be wrong, but with a project this long in the tooth, it's hard to have much faith in it coming along in a timely fashion.
